Educator's Review: Cell Explorer: The Animal Cell teaches players about the organelles in an animal cell. Each level reinforces the knowledge learned previously, in a visual way. Players learn to recognize each organelle and its function, and are tested in several different ways during the game to reinforce the information.
Please Note: Cell Explorer feels more like an interactive lesson than a game, and information is presented mostly through text so there is a decent amount of reading on each screen. However, the information on each screen is very focused, so the reading should be manageable for a middle school student. When your ship is caught or you run out of energy, you do have to start the level over from the beginning. While this can be frustrating for a player who needs many tries to complete a level (levels are not challenging and it's not that easy to die in the middle), it also serves as a review of the information which will help the player do better on the next level.
